Weebles Wobble...And They Glow in the Dark!

I had two toy nemeses growing up.  One was my best friend from grade school and the other was my younger neighbor.  They always seemed to have the best toys.

I remember walking into their house one weekend morning (yes, walked right in. I was the Dennis the Menace to their Mr. Wilson) and found their son who was a few years younger than me playing with this:

The Weebles Haunted House. Now, being 9, I was already a few years beyond the recommended age for this, but man I wanted it.  I'd seen commercials for it with the revolving bookcase, the fun mirror, the glow-in-the-dark Weeble Ghost.  Did you hear what I said? A glow-in-the-freaking-dark Weeble Ghost!

The commercial that started my obsession

We spent the morning playing with it and like so many of his toys, I never saw it again. I recall casually mentioning it when Christmas time was approaching and hearing my mom say, "You're too old for that."  Next to "you'll shoot your eye out", that was the most cursed words a kid can hear at Christmas.

A few years ago, I was at a garage sale when I came across just the top roof section of the house in a box of toys.

I knew parts for the house sold on eBay, so I grabbed it and took it up to the host.  She looked at it and said, "Oh, that goes with the Weebles house that's in the box under the table." I about jumped out of my skin. Sure enough, under the table in the original box was the Weebles Haunted house. The house wasn't in the best of shape, but I wasn't complaining.

The Witch originally came with a pointed black hat.

The fun mirror spins around and has a bookcase on the other side. Unfortunately, my cardboard insert is missing.

The box is pretty rough and appears to have held a blender at some point in its life.

The second Weeble from the left doesn't belong to the set, but I let him stay.

The glow-in-the-dark ghost I so coveted has completely lost all facial features and was redrawn by my daughter in Sharpie marker (and faded again).  But he still glows in the dark.

    1. "Kids in grown up skins". I like that, even if it sounds a little creepy.
