Keeping Your Coffee Honest -- The Secret's Out

I drink a lot of coffee.  A lot of coffee.  I'm not one of those coffee house drinkers though, sipping latte frappe grandes.  Mine is the straight black joe.  There's nothing better than a good cup of coffee, however, there's also nothing worse than a bad one.   And if there's one thing I won't tolerate, it's coffee that lies.  Here's a guide that will stop a deceitful cup of coffee in its tracks.

  1. this makes me miss our vacuum pot. of all the ways people make coffee now, i still think the vacuum pot is the best. i need to replace our top half (again -- those suckers tend to get broken, sigh)

  2. I've never used a vacuum pot although I've envied them when I've seen them at antique malls. I'll have to keep an eye out for one at the sales. I've seen the chrome ones before, I assume they work the same as the glass ones? A little more indestructible maybe.

    1. ours was a new one, from Bodum, and we only used it on weekends since it is a bit more time consuming. but man, i felt it made really great coffee. i've never tried one of the old ones, let alone the chrome ones. usually when i see them in antique stores (never in thrifts any more) they are always missing a part or is broken -- either the filter is gone, or the rubber gasket that seals the top from the bottom is shot.

That was going to be my next question -- what parts are required. I would imagine the gasket can be a problem with an older one -- a tight seal is vital I would think.

    3. definitely -- a tight seal is critical to get the brewed coffee back down into the bottom carafe. the filters tend to wear out or get lost on the older models. the good ones were made of fabric, i think, and they just get old and disintegrate, or just get lost. our newer bodum maker is all plastic and metal parts, so the filter will last forever. but alas, the glass can still get broken, haha
