The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

The 1980 television (loose) adaption of Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" was actually pretty good, even though it wandered far from the original.

Starring Jeff Goldblum as Ichabod Crane, Meg Foster (she of the bewitching eyes) as Katrina Van Tassel, Dick Butkus(!) as Brom Bones and John Silvester White (Mr. Woodman from Welcome Back Kotter), the original broadcast was hosted by Steve Allen and Gary "Watchoo talkin' 'bout, Willis" Coleman.

I watched it when it aired and liked it a lot, of course I was 13 at the time and loved anything to do with Halloween.  I found a VHS copy for $1 at an estate sale a few years ago.

Apparently, the VHS release was after Goldblum gained fame for his fantastic performance in "The Fly".

Thanks to Bob over at It Came From the Mancave blog for reminding me about this gem.  While this still isn't available on DVD, the entire movie is on Youtube.  The video isn't sharable to other websites, so you'll need to right-click and select "Copy Video URL" and paste to your browser address bar.

  1. My brother and I watch this version every year. Always get a kick out of seeing John Silvester White aka "Mr. Woodman" in this production. Lots of fun!

    1. Hi Chelly! It's been a while since I've watched this one, but I plan on remedying that this weekend. I'll be transferring it to DVD while I watch so I can have it safely without the concern of a VCR.

    2. Tom did your transfer work? If so I will be doing that as well. I just know some VHS will not transfer over with my player/burner.

    3. I got lazy and watched it through the Youtube app on my tv. I have had trouble with a few VHS tapes that were encoded with a security blocker. This is a pretty low-budget tape, so I'm betting it doesn't have that. I'll have to give it a try out of curiosity's sake, and just in case it gets yanked (unlikely) from Youtube.
