What was on TV October 24th through 30th, 1981

This is a repost from October 30th, 2015, but it's a fun one. Plus I've fixed the invalid Youtube links. Enjoy!

I don't have a lot of commentary on this issue simply because I wanted to get it out quickly.  Halloween is fast approaching and I'm hopping busy.  This issue has some great Halloween show ads including "Disney's Halloween", "Bugs Bunny's Howl-oween", "Dark Night of the Scarecrow" (still a favorite), the network debut of "John Carpenter's Halloween" and of course "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown."  The network shows were running behind this year, so there are also lots of season premiers of your favorite shows from yesteryear.  Enjoy!

"It's beige" doesn't seem like a winning ad campaign.

Some early Christmas advertising.  They always did rush things.

I couldn't find the full Bugs Bunny special online, but here's Fat Albert.  I know, it doesn't really make up for it.

This promo is from 1977, but I'll bet it didn't change much by 1981.

Hickory Farms is letting you know, Christmas is just around the corner.

  1. Such a flashback! I especially love seeing the write ups and reviews of the first airing of "Halloween". Awesome, thanks for scanning and sharing. Happy Halloween!

  2. I had forgotten all about Robert MacKenzie's reviews. TV Guide used to be a must-read, back when it had the market cornered and there was no Internet. They could have simply filled the thing with listings and advertisements and made a gazillion dollars. But it was filled with quality commentary, articles, reviews and more. It was certainly not just a shill for the networks. Of course, now all the commentary happens instantaneously -- we discuss The Walking Dead and a hundred other shows during and immediately after the airing of the episode, on a 100 different websites. No need to screeners or advance viewings for critics any more. You wouldn't dare want all those plot twists to get out there in advance and spoil things.

  4. I was wondering if you had the "TV Guide" issues from January 17-23, and January 24-30, 1981, and if so, I was curious if you could possibly put them up on your site.

    1. Actually, I already posted January 17th through 23rd, 1981 here: http://garagesalin.blogspot.com/2015/01/what-was-on-tv-january-17th-through.html. I do have January 24th through 30th as well. I'm pretty busy with Halloween postings right now, but I can publish that in January. Meanwhile, if there's something in particular you're looking for, I can sacn that and send it to you.
