Flying W Ranch Chuckwagon Suppers

This ticket to admit one to the Flying W Ranch Chuckwagon Supper was among the brochures I found recently.

I would guess it dates from the 1950's as most of the brochures were from that same time.  Printed on the back is "My Creed" by Dean Alfange.  Alfange was and American politician who ran under numerous parties.  He penned "My Creed" for This Week magazine in the 1950's.

Flying W suffered a devastating loss in 2012 when it was overrun by the Waldo Canyon wildfire (sounds like someone missed out on this handout).

Here's an interview with the 87-year-old (in 2012) owner just after the fire.

Their website is still active and there is hopeful speculation they will reopen for business this summer.  I hope they do.

  1. that creed sounds a lot like a Trump speech: lots of defiant, non-specific words there. i have a t-shirt i bought whose proceeds went to benefits the families of firefighters and victims of that fire. it was a crazy kickstarter-like effort that spread, well, like wildfire: http://www.wildfiretees.com/

    1. It looks like that charity is wrapped up. Flying V has an organization of their own devoted to restoring the wildfire area. http://www.flyingwranchfoundation.org/

    2. yeah, WildFire is done, but it ran for a couple years before moving on to other things. good to see that the Flying W still is raising money though.

  2. What a sad video! Even if they make a come back it will not be the same.

    1. Yeah, I felt bad for the owner. Terrible to see your business burn down at 87.

  3. Well I live in Manitou Springs and Flying W is still in business. I am not sure they are doing chuck wagon supers but they do board horses. I have even done fire mitigation volunteer work on their property. They are sitting on a gold mine of front range real estate so don't feel to sorry for them.

  4. I attended one of the Chuck wagon suppers in the late 1950s and picked up a copy of the Creed. I made a wooden copy of that Creed and other copies that I have adopted and followed over the last 70 years. I am sorry that I never got back to the flying W Ranch add wish I had a chance to meet Dean and talk with him before he passed recently. I still have copies of the creed which I share with friends and family. May God bless his memory and his philosophy.
