What to do in Gatlinburg, Tennessee in July of 1964

Who wants more vintage travel ephemera?! Well, too bad, you're getting it anyway. Today's offering is this oddly red-colored brochure for Gatlingurg, Tennessee from July, 1964.  Why they just didn't go with all black and white, I don't know. My wife and I tent-camped in Gatlinburg about 25 years ago. Wettest week of my life.

Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park is still open.

As is Rock City

Mystery Hill was most likely another "Mystery Spot" attraction.

"Faithful reproduction"? You be the judge.

My family visited Gatlinburg in 1967.  I'm not sure who took this picture of my brother, sister and Dad, but if it was my mother, she had a very uncomfortable ride up since she would have been 7 1/2 months pregnant with me.

She has a look on her face as if she sees something horrifying and her son and husband behind her are about to make the same discovery.

"Confederama" has been renamed "Battles for Chattanooga Museum".

I wonder what the proprietors' names were. Still in business.

"Smoky Sky Lift" must have been a competitor for "The Sky-Lift". I don't see any kind of lap restraint. Could explain why they're no longer in business.

Ghost Town In-The-Sky is currently "on hiatus".
I always loved the kitschy gift shops on road trips. Chicken-feather headresses and rubber tomahawks for everyone!

  1. Ho-made bread? Am I charged by the loaf or the half hour?

  2. Very Cool. . .1964 was the year I started kindergarten. I am guessing it was also about the year my mother and Grandmother took me on a trip to South Carolina. . Still vividly remember parts of the trip and looking out the windows. (Do kids today look up from their smart phones long enough to notice?)

Still, moments I hold dear. Thanks for posting. Very cool!

    1. I can vouch (since I have 5 kids of my own) for the fact kids do not look up from the smartphones on trips any more. I've tried to explain to my kids what they're missing, but they don't hear me because they have their earbuds in.
