Jack and Jill October 1961

I'm going to take it easy today and just post this October 1961 issue of Jack and Jill with little commentary. I hope you don't mind.  I'm posting mainly the Halloween related pages of the magazine, although I did include the interview with Jerry Mathers since it's on the cover and because "Leave it to Beaver" is one of my favorite shows.  Answers to the puzzles at the end.

Even if you can't read music, it's not too hard to figure out what tune "Sing Hi Ho for Halloween" is set to.
This game has nothing to do with Halloween, but neat and so of the times.

  1. Old enough to remember this magazine. I remember color photos from "Beany and Cecil" and the animated feature "Man From Button Willow", so I was a slightly later reader. Hadn't thought of "Diz and Liz" in decades, but it suddenly flashed back.

Our household also had Humpty Dumpty (great for cutout stuff and occasional articles in comic book format), Calling All Girls (my sister's), and something I think was called Golden Magazine. The mascot was a parrot who was featured in a little comic strip.

There was also a summer edition of Weekly Reader. I recall reading the first episodes of a few different serials but not following through, which now haunts me. I flipped to the jokes first.

I remember being very familiar with Highlights for Children, although we didn't have it at home. Dad was a doctor, and we often waited in the clinic waiting room. Did a lot of people subscribe to that one, or did most kids meet Goofus and Gallant while sitting in waiting rooms?

  2. Hi DBenson. Glad to bring some memories back. I do have some October editions of Humpty Dumpty, so if I get time, I'll post those this season as well. We never subscribed to children's magazines like these, although I did have a subscription to Dynamite magazine (I was a '70's kid). I do recall stacks of them including Highlights at the barber shop though.
    Thanks for stopping by!

  3. I was a regular reader of Highlights, Weekly Reader, and Dynamite (as well as Ranger Rick), but i didn't subscribe to anything except Dynamite, i think. i did probably see Highlights and Ranger Rick in waiting rooms, or else they were passed on to us from other families. who doesn't love Goofus & Gallant? haha

    1. It does sound good. Sounds like a spin on the classic popcorn ball which I'm a fan of. I remember getting homemade ones in my treat bag, something that sadly can't be done anymore.

  5. Man I loved reading these old magazines as a child. From the poems, puzzles, and life lessons to that fantastic art!

  6. I always loved Jack and Jill. I remember my mom getting them in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
