Play It Safe, Mister

So says this apple-headed youth. I guess we are to infer that Amoco gas is safe.

As you may have guessed, this is a map of the Delaware-Maryland-Virginia-West Virginia area, and that includes Washington D.C.  It dates from 1957.

The back pitches their new featherweight plastic Amoco credit card.

As a kid on cross-country vacations, I remember being a bit confused by the different gas stations using the same torch logo sign, not realizing they were all owned by American Oil.

American Oil Company (Amoco) was bought out by British Petroleum (BP) in 1998. So much for that revolution thing.  In 2017, BP announced they were bringing back the Amoco branding in the United States.  The largest Amoco sign in the world stands in my hometown of St. Louis and has stood here throughout the brand changes.

As for that kid, personally, I wouldn't feel safe for a minute with him hanging around.

  2. He just visited a Texaco EXTRA CLEAN restroom. They discontinued that pledge shortly thereafter.

  3. That is definitely one of the more bizarre kids I've seen in an advertising illustration. Especially since they presumably weren't TRYING to make him bizarre. It's like they hired someone to do a Norman Rockwell rip-off and got a little David Lynch thrown in for free.

    2. Yes. That Van Camp's kid looks like he'll grow up and someday take his family on a winter retreat to a mountain hotel to write a novel.
