Hello Nurse! Happy Halloween!

Well, that went quick.  The big day is here.  Welcome to Halloween all!  Here in the midwest, we've been experiencing an Indian Summer with temperatures in the low 80's.  Not very Halloween-like, but it's supposed to cool down with a thunderstorm in the early morning of Halloween.

This photo was among the lot I bought earlier this year from which I've posted a few photos.  I felt pretty fortunate to find a Halloween photo as they're not terribly common, especially in this size (8" x 10"). The original owner of the photos was a nurse beginning in the 1920's.  The back of this photo is labeled "Nurse's Halloween Party Chicago".

Let's take a closer look. First up, these decorations.

I identified the crepe banner hanging in the doorway as made by Dennison.  Here's a digitized image of the original crepe. It was first offered by Dennison in 1913.

Let's look at some close-ups of the nurses and their costumes.

It's possible the girl with the X on her is our nurse.  I'll have to compare photos from the lot.  I wonder why the little girl has her eyes closed.

I wonder what they did at their party.  What did they eat?  Did they play games?  This book I posted a few years ago may offer some possibilities.

Well, enjoy the day (and the night).  I'll try to get a post out midday today and if not, I'll follow up tomorrow on how things went.

  2. What a great way to end this year's run of posts! love the photo. I think the little girl is closing her eyes against the anticipated flash for the camera. Some of the costumes are impossible to tell what they are, don't you think? flappers, hobos, witches, gangsters... maybe? hope your halloween goes well, everyone!

    1. Mine went fine. Not as many kids as usual, but a respectable showing.
