So when I came across this rocket-shaped Duracrest electric popper that looked ready to blast right off, all priced at a dollar, I had to have it.
It's aluminum with a plastic dome. There's a glass jewel eye that lights up orange when the element is on, a feature I've seen on toasters as well. I haven't been able to find any like it on the internet, nor much about the company. I would place it in the 1950's or 60's.
We've made a few batches of corn with it already, and it does a respectable job. The only challenges with it are it has a concave bottom which allows the oil to pool rather than spread evenly and there's no stirrer built in, so there's a whole lotta shakin' goin' on.
oooh, as you know, i am right with you. popcorn holds a fond place in my heart. i only order movie popcorn (with the squeezins-of-evil that is the movie goo) for SPECIAL movies (the final harry potter will be one), and i have very good associations for a fine pan 'o' corn.
ReplyDeletei have never seen the likes of this popper, but i would certainly be swayed by its design as well. these days i'm back to the standard pan + oil (coconut) + salt = bliss.
Coconut oil, eh? Isn't that the evil oil they banned from movie theater popcorn a while back? Can you buy just coconut oil? I've seen the premixed popcorn bags that have coconut oil, but never standalone. I'm all the way with you on movie theater "buttered" goo; an absolute neccessity for any movie-going experience. For as infrequent that I go to the movies, I think I my body can withstand it.
