A Crushing Find

Although I have absolutely no use for this 1960's Rival Ice-O-Mat Ice Crusher, I couldn't leave it behind for $2. It's in remarkable condition.

My mom had an older version in 1950's turquoise that I loved playing with when I was a kid. But you had to watch your fingers.

Those things hurt when you got a little too close to the action.

This is a countertop or wall mount model and still had the wall mounting hardware attached.

I previously found an electric ice crusher and noted at that time how the in-door ice crushers of today's refrigerators have made these obsolete, but I've heard from other collectors that they prefer the consistency of the crushed ice from these compared to today's refrigerator models.

  1. i was just using an Ice-o-Mat the other night, in fact, but not this model. ours is red and white, and looks like this one:

they work so well. can't make summer tiki drinks quite the same way without 'em! long live the Ice-o-Mat.

    1. Ah yes. That's similar to my mom's, except hers had a turquoise band instead of red.

  2. Does it work? What else could you crush with it?

    1. It does work. It's pretty basic. Grinds up whatever you put in there including fingers.

  3. So it's a Snoopy Sno-Cone Machine minus Snoopy.

    1. Well, now that you say that, it takes away ALL the fun!

  4. How about ginger? I am looking for a way to make ginger beer and my juicer just does not do ginger justice.

  6. Wow. That IS a beauty. My great-grandparents' house had an ice crusher installed on the side of a freestanding kitchen cabinet that held all of the canned goods. There was also a bottle opener attached to the side, near the ice crusher. Years after the ice crusher was no longer necessary, it was removed and trashed. A shame.

    1. Yes, that's too bad. I love those wall-mounted mechanical appliances. We had a Swing-a-way can opener mounted to our door frame that fascinated me.
