Blowing in the Wind

I found this beaten scarecrow at the same estate sale as this witch and this witch.  I really like the design of this.  The colors are still vibrant, the haystacks and pumpkins well-detailed.

A safety pin holds his jacket closed against the cold while his formless legs flap mercilessly in the October gusts. He grasps desperately at his hat in the blowing wind, but still manages to lose the top.

At first I thought he was a die cut, but it appears to be hand-painted and on thicker stock cardboard than typical die cuts.

The back appears to have had some sort of paddle or stand at one time, based on the ghost outline.

I'm guessing this was a point-of-sale store advertising piece, perhaps stuck among a mound of apples or Halloween Candy and probably dates from the 1950's.

  1. Curious piece of ephemera. It would be nice to know a little more about him.
