Time to look at (and listen to) another record. This one didn't appear on the back of a cereal box, but was published by Peter Pan. It features a cover of the Ross Bagdasarian (aka David Seville of Chipmunks fame) song "Witch Doctor". I believe it dates from the 1970s.
I like the shrunken head our fine doctor is swinging around. It reminds me of the one I found a while back.
The reverse shows what other Peter Pan records could be purchased. There is a Monster Mash record, but the rest are strictly children's fair.
The 45 is four tracks long featuring 2 songs and 2 stories. The second track on the first side ("The Deadly Waiter Story") is actually pretty horrifying listening for a child as it features the sound effects of a woman being shredded by Dracula. Bonus: Listen for the very Homer-esque scream at 4:40. It's so close, it makes me wonder if Dan Castellaneta actually did the scream for "The Simpsons" or if they chose to use this existing stock scream for Homer.
I was disappointed "Goon River" wasn't a parody of "Moon River", but rather a surfer-style mostly instrumental-only piece. I apologize for the couple skips in there, but frankly, I don't think you'll notice. I can see parents making their kids turn this one off (if they made it past the gruesome murder on the previous side).
The final track, "The Beast in the Night Story" is pretty tame (read *yawn*) compared to the slurping bloodfest on the other side.
If you care (and dare) to listen, I've uploaded it to Youtube.
HOLY BUCKETS. How is this real?? It's too great to be true. It looks like one of those covers that would be created by the cottage of industry of artists who like to make plausibly-real-looking book covers, posters and other images from a version of the 1970s that's even more paranormal than the one we got (Scarfolk, for example). This is an incredible find. And so very, very wrong.

DeleteThanks for leading me down that rabbit hole, Chris.
That was a slurping blood fest.
ReplyDeleteFunny stuff. The art is kind of cool. I had some Peter Pan, not this one though. Good find!
ReplyDeleteThat smile is kinda creepy!
