Let's Eat Outdoors

I know it's not officially over until September 22nd and we still have Labor Day in there, but school starts here next week so let's just call it: Summer is all but over.  But before it ends, let's get out one last time and eat amongst nature...with a big pot of beans and a can of Spam.

Milk on a hot day? To quote Ron Burgundy, "Milk was a bad choice."

I won't mention what movie scene this page reminds me of. Hey. I didn't make you click the link.

It appears Stokely's was a subsidiary of Vam Camps. It looks like the brand is now owned by Wing Yip and only available in the UK.

I'm not gonna lie. I'd eat anything on that page.

Wait... Add syrup to the pancake batter first? That borders on the genius of feeding mayonnaise to tuna fish.

Dairy Foods?  Sure, beef hot dogs come from cows, but not in the "dairy" sense.

We never used Dixie Cups at home when I was a kid.  We weren't "green", we just couldn't afford them.

I have to admit I have tolerated drinking instant coffee in a pinch, but I could never get beyond the taste of instant tea. Blech.

"Bannock" sounds like a '70's detective TV show. Maybe I'm thinking of "Banacek".

"Trix Cakes. Dip in Trix -- the gay fruit-colored cereal."  Hey Betty. Pink and yellow aren't exactly gay.  By 2015, Trix had become almost 3 times gayer when they expanded the flavors from the original "Orangey Orange", "Lemony Yellow", and "Raspberry Red" to include "Grapity Purple", "Lime Green", "Wildberry Blue", "Watermelon Burst", "Rasp-orangey orange swirl" and "Wildberry Red Swirl". Alas, in 2015, General Foods went "au naturale" and the number dropped to just the 4 flavors they could actually extract from nature.

  1. RE: Stokely / Van Camp. How about a thirty minute corporate cartoon from the '40s? BONUS: Some mild profanity and risqué gags.

    1. Thanks James! That cartoon is both amazing and strange. I'd never heard of Hugh Harman, but reading through his bio, he had quite the animation career going from Disney to Warner Bros to MGM before starting his own studio.

  2. Ok the Spam grinded up mixed with cheese and soup on a bun I would try!! And if Betty would have tweeted about trix back then by today's standards she would be fired. I love these old flyers you find! So much fun to read.

    1. Glad you enjoyed, Bob. And I think we could still get Betty on a technicality.

  3. a lot of these recipes sound... questionable... to me in one way or another, but i also am intrigued by the idea of putting corn syrup in the pancake batter (if you cut back on the other added sugar first, because omg)... i would think that the syrup would caramelize nicely, but then again, doesn't sugar do that anyway? maybe it's just for the flavor.

    1. Yeah, I may have to try it just to see. But I like my syrup, so I'd probably still end up adding some.

  4. A bannock is a Scottish flat bread. I eat them when I visit his Lordship's ancestral homeland. I think spam cakes sound like a winner!

  5. I miss those paper cups with the handle! Or maybe they still make em? Who knows... anyway, these days my stomach no longer allows me to consume beans, but lordy I'll lay waste to those dogs 'n a biscuit and kill two recipes with one stone by making 'em blueberry too!

    1. re: Paper cups with handles. The last time I saw those was in a coffee vending machine in the 90's. I would purposely pull them out and use them as the handle to drink my coffee instead of just holding the cup itself. Really bothered people.
I'm in the same boat with beans. Can't eat them anymore.
