Stag Famous Firsts

Just in the nick of time for your New Years Eve party are these helpful party and snack tips from the folks at Stag Beer.  There's no date on this, but based on the hair and clothes styles, I'd put it late 1950's.

Believe it or not, post prohibition, Stag Beer outsold Budweiser and Staff in the St. Louis area and it's distribution covered 22 states.  It has since significantly downsized and is no only available locally in central and southern Illinois.

  1. i like how they make sure STAG BEER is mentioned often and that STAG BEER is always in all caps, at least for the first several pages. subtle! i don't think i've ever tried STAG BEER, but it sounds like Miller to me. happy new year -- bring on 2021, and good riddance 2020!

  2. I don't know about your late Fifties guess--Mister Magoo was a spokestoon for Stag Beer at that time, so it would be likely any promotional booklet would be centered around him. P.S. There's a few funny Magoo/Stag commercials on YouTube.

    1. Doing a little research, it looks like Griesdieck (who owned Stag at the time of this pamphlet) sold to Falstaff in 1957, so it must pre-date that. And Mr. Magoo sponsoring Stag Beer? Maybe he wasn't near-sighted, just drunk.

    2. my eyesight has worsened to the point that i make Mr. Magoo jokes a lot -- now i can use them for drinking, too! "oh, Magoo, you've done it again!"

    1. Totally different book. You have to get those at the back of the store.

  4. Hmmm I wonder if I could still find STAG BEER around here? In the meantime I'll have to whip up the Midnight Super.

  5. OK, let's talk about the guy with the beer in the lower-center part of the front cover. We know exactly how this guy would vote today, how he'd tweet, who his favorite cable news personalities would be, and what he'd shout at the umpire at his kid's youth baseball game.
