Scholastic Memories

I've written before of my fond memories of Scholastic Books and the two magical days in school: when the Scholastic Book Club order form would arrive and the day the books you ordered arrived.

I recently found a few more of these flyers.

Arrow Book Clubs was a division of Scholastic Books. These books were aimed at 4th through 6th graders.  There was also the T.A.B. Book Club (Teen-age Books) that were aimed at older students.

Not only did I order books from Scholastic, I had had many of the older books from my siblings.  I've also picked up quite a few over the years at sales.  I'll post pictures below of the books I have that appear on these pages.  Let me know if there are any you remember.

Different cover, but same book

  1. i too have waxed on and on about how much i loved Scholastic Books. i definitely remember that "Happiness is a Warm Puppy" collection, and "Ramona the Pest" was a personal favorite. Do they still do something like this in schools anymore? sure seems like kids don't read books like these any more.

    1. They did still when my kids were little, although they had shifted focus from books to gadgets and software. They got into some trouble for that, so not sure what their current status is.

  2. The only thing better than getting the latest Scholastic order form was the day that the books actually came in. Just seeing the scanned pages makes me happy.

I have to see if I can track down Mrs Coverlet's Magicians based on the cover alone!

Could not get enough spy/code books as a kid, always checking them out at the library.

    1. Yes, those were definitely the 2 highlights of the month in school.
I was a monster/cryptid/ghost kid. I always bought those books.

    2. Same! And, of course, Dynamite magazine

    3. Yes, Dynamite became a staple for me. I eventually bought a subscription and got it until I was much older than its intended audience.

    4. It would be amazing if someone would do a crowd funded Dynamite compilation. Might be hard to find people that worked on it but behind the scenes and several issue reprints would be sweet.

  3. Miss those times sometimes. Quite exciting deciding what to spend my little funds on.

    1. Yes. I memory serves me, when I was allowed to buy, I was given $1. I could usually get at least 2 books for that.

  4. I have also purchased these books at flea markets. I feel very nostalgic.

    1. I always check the book shelves at estate sales. These books are easily recognizable among others, even by their spines.

  5. We had a bunch of these - Justin Morgan had a horse, Story of Daniel Boone, Ramona the Pest, Gentle Ben, and Encyclopedia Brown. Being one of six kids, I did not get to order often. But when I did, what a treat! My daughter, being a lonely only got to order often. Good memories from scholastic!

    1. I inherited a bunch of my older siblings' Scholastic books and you're right, coming from a family of 6 myself it was a rare treat to be able to order from them.
