This "Mr. (if you please) Space" kite by Top Flite (purveyors of bad spelling for over 50 years) probably dates from the 1950's or early 60's.
His smug mug says, "I fly in space, kid. What are you going to do with your life?"
According to this article, Top Flite kites were made by the Crunden-Martin Manufacturing Company, a local St. Louis company that existed until 1990. Their other popular kites were also space or aeronautic-based.
And for those more grounded kids.
wow, that NASA kite is fantastic. i wonder if they paid for the use of the NASA logo -- i suppose they had to to even show the shuttle in the first place. do kids fly kites anymore? do they even know what kites ARE? like you say, it was a rare thing even when we were that age. i can't imagine it's something anyone does anymore. kite flying has probably gone the way of rolling hoops with sticks.
ReplyDeleteI thought about broaching the topic of "do kids still play with kites", but mine do on (rare) occasion and I didn't want to come off as one of those "in my day" people, even if I am.
