Imagineering Fake Skin

I've previously written about Imagineering and their glorious products and how they impacted my childhood.  What I didn't know was how long they lasted.

I found this Imagineering "Fake Skin" at an estate sale late in the season last year.  It dates from 1990.

Imagineering Second Skin

There's something disturbing about something called "Second Skin".  Almost lycanthropic, like that scene I recall from a werewolf movie (possibly one of "The Howlings") where they shed their human skin as they transform. Someone help me out here.

Anyway, this is just a make-up kit from Imagineering.  I've written before of my love and memories of their products.

Imagineering Sparkling Faces

This Imagineering Party Makeup dates from 1987, so it's a little after my time and appears to be aimed at the Glitter Rock crowd, also not my crowd.  You can also see it was purchased from Venture (a local midwest department store similar to K-Mart) for $6.39. Quite pricey for 1987.

Next to latex masks, the other Halloween disguise I longed for was the packaged Halloween makeup that was sold at stores like Ben Franklin and Venture (a local discount department store).  I imagined myself as a vampire, layered in white pancake makeup, black circles under my eyes, hair dyed black with a widow's peak, fangs in place and blood dripping down my mouth. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford the specialty makeup and only had access to my mother's excess makeup.  That meant I had to make do with foundation powder, eyeliner and lipstick.  One year, I attempted a werewolf with that assortment.  Trust me, it didn't work.

My memories of Halloween makeup are of the vast varieties of Imagineering props, blood and makeup.

Who knew that in the 1980's, card company Hallmark dabbled in Halloween makeup?  Well, I didn't.

I'm pretty sure these two wouldn't have looked out of place on any day of the year in the 1980's.

Disguised

When I was deciding on a Halloween costume as a kid, it was always my goal to not be recognized, whether it was through the use of mask or makeup.  I generally didn't have the scratch for a costume, so many times, it was makeup.  I've written previously about some of my failed attempts at using makeup to disguise myself.

Imagineering and other companies sold kits aimed at making kids think they could successfully disguise themselves without the need for makeup.  I recently found the remnants of some of those kits.

Halloween 5: The Baggening

Welcome to Year 5 of my participation in the Countdown to Halloween. And let me be honest: I really questioned whether I would participate this year.

If you have kept up with this blog, I'm sure you've noted a dwindling of the number of posts this year. Only 15 so far this year compared to 87 by this same time in 2017. Aside from me losing that bloggin' feelin', there were medical issues in my family and general life dumps that just squashed the fun out of blogging. Not to mention, garage saling just ain't what it used to be. The treasures are few and far between these days. But enough about me, let's get to the first bag of the season.

While not terribly old, these grocery bags hearken back to the days before "paper or plastic" was an option.

Spearhead Industries Mummy Make-Up Disguise Kit

My first Halloween was the only year I got a store-bought costume. It was a Ben Cooper Spider-man in all its red, blue and yellow shame (I won't go into how disappointed I was with the off-model coloring).  Every year after that, I was on my own to make myself up with whatever resources I had. I've written previously how I used my mom's makeup and Imagineering vampire blood and teeth to transform myself into a wannabe Wolfman (everyone thought I was a tramp).  I never had any actual Halloween makeup like this.

This Mummy Make-Up Disguise Kit comes from a little-known company called Spearhead Industries.  It dates from 1981.  While it's hard to see, it comes with a "mirror" on the front of the packaging so you can check yourself out.  It's actually just a thin strip of reflective foil.

Funny Bones

I recall one Halloween in high school, back in those magical years known as "the '80's", when a friend (you know who you are) showed up to school with this guy tucked in his pocket.

In case you thought this was a regular eyepatch, you're wrong.  It's a WICKED eyepatch.  Must be for pirates from Boston.

Movie Monster Memories

In the Second Grade, I stole a book.  Yes, my life of crime has been well documented.  I stole it from the classroom library.  I was the only person that ever checked it out and I couldn't find it anywhere else. At least, so I justified. So around the last day of school, I just swiped it.  I'm not proud of it.  But as karma will be, a few years later, another kid stole it from me. And I've been looking for it ever since.

So I was ecstatic when I found this beat up copy at a garage sale over the summer.
