It's become a tradition to include at least one piece of child's Halloween art each season on my blog. This crayon-colored mimeograph of the month of October fits the bill.
Three puppies surround a cart of Jack O' Lanterns while other pumpkins prepare to attack from their hiding place behind the corn shocks. Pumpkin scalps lie scattered in the grass behind the cart. How long will the puppy/pumpkin feud last? How many seeds must be spilled?
Of the years Halloween fell on a Saturday (and isn't it the best when it does?), given the use of mimeograph vs photocopy, I'm guessing this is either 1970 or 1981. The next possibility is 1987, but I think most schools were photocopying or printing on dot matrix by then. The previous possible year is 1964, but this scene of "cute puppies" fits more in the later years. I'm leaning toward 1970.
Someone really did use this as a calendar, as is evidenced by the writing; school pictures on the 10th, art on the 13th, PTA on the 22nd and that wondrous day when the bookmobile arrives is on the 23rd. Oh, and don't forget, your book report is due on the 19th.
But most magical of all, Halloween is, of course, on the 31st. I hope you had a good time, kid. And watch out for those puppies; they're killers.
i find the location of the lone wheel the most disturbing thing about this entire thing. oh wait -- is it supposed to be a wheelbarrow? that makes more sense. never mind! Anyway, i think the puppies are stealing the (mysteriously already carved?) pumpkins from the pursuing corn shocks.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure i've mentioned this before, but Halloween is extra special in Nevada because it's also Nevada Day, when the state was admitted to the Union, so it's also a state holiday. most things are closed.

Wow, that would be great for Halloween. As for me, it's known at work that I'll be off every year on Halloween.
I swore I'd never move out of New England so I'd always have the true autumn season but having Halloween be a holiday sounds enticing!
Deleteyeah, it's pretty great, and i assume it's extra great from the kids' perspective (off from school, AND it's Halloween? awesome!). The other thing here is that there's no moving of when trick or treating is to make it always happen on a weekend. None of that nonsense here -- it's ALWAYS on Halloween, whenever that falls. maybe it sucks for some adults, but i like it. trick or treating should happen ON Halloween, dammit.
